I feel competition is important and necessary in everyone's life. It not only deems a great importance in sports but practically any facet of life. Life can be better if you remain competitive in daily happenings. When it does not exist due to lack thereof an opponent, you can have a contest with yourself using past statistical data. You can try to better yourself or get more right answers than last time. The thing even more important is learning to set goals for yourself and working to achieve them. Any positive influence or coach's job is to get members of the team believing in a goal. If you as coach set a goal for your team it means nothing. A successful team leader does not set the goals for his team, but his or her task is to get the player to believe that it is something that they want to achieve themselves. It makes more sense striving to achieve a personal goal rather than trying reach a certain level that someone else wishes you to achieve. Competition generally has me thinking athletics, because sports dominate much of my thinking. However it can be parlayed to work in every topic. Being competitive and setting goals are essential tasks as far as I am concerned.
